Obituary of Bernard Selinger
Bernard ‘Bernie’ Selinger of Red Deer, Ab, passed away at the Red Deer Hospice on December 20, 2024, at the age of 69.
Bernie was born on July 6, 1955 in Regina, Sk. He was lovingly adopted by Harry & Margaret Selinger of Unity, Sk. He and his older sister Bonnie grew up helping their parents operate the local Drive In & Movie Theatre. Later on he went to STI in Moose Jaw taking Radio TV Technology.
Bernie married Joan Grant in May, 1982. Together they owned and operated Nuway Cleaners for 25 years. Bernie also worked for local businesses, installing and fixing anything electronic, most recently for Cinema Satellite.
Bernie and Joan were blessed with two sons; Alec and Mark. Bernie shared with them his love of camping, fishing, and RC modeling. For many years he was a Scout leader and a member of the Unity Fire Department.
After the boys were grown and gone, Bernie and Joan moved to Saskatoon where Bernie managed The Terrace Condominium until the arrivals of grandchildren in Alberta led them to move to Red Deer to be active in their lives. This is where Bernie retired with a seasonal campsite at Sandy Point to spend his days taking both young and old fishing in his boat. He called it his Happy Place.
He survived a benign brain tumor surgery in August, 2023, only to be diagnosed shortly after with Esophageal cancer.
Bernie is survived by his wife Joan; son Alec and his children Leighton and Whitley of St. Albert; son Mark (Halee) and their girls Payten, Addison, and Irelyn of Penhold; sister Bonnie (Dan) Fyculak of Stony Plain; nephew Kyley (Sherri) and girls Sienna and Taylor; niece Kirsten (Craig) Price and girls Nikki and Kennedy, all of Spruce Grove. He is also survived by numerous members of the Grant Family. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Margaret, and by his daughter-in-law, Jennifer.
It was Bernie’s wish to go home to Saskatchewan, so a memorial will be held in Unity in the Spring of 2025, and his ashes will be scattered on his favorite Northern fishing lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society through their website at www.reddeerhospice.com. Condolences to Bernie’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Selinger” in the subject line.
