Obituary of Violet Matchett
Violet Matchett passed away peacefully at the Hamlets of Red Deer on October 31, 2023 at the age of 97. Violet was born on January 26, 1926 in Hilda, Alberta, to parents Henry and Sophie Wormsbecker. She was raised along with her six sisters and three brothers in a farming community near Glidden, Saskatchewan.
Violet married Melvin Matchett on July 16, 1958 in Brock, Saskatchewan. They started their lives together with two sons Donald and younger son Murray in Cabri, Saskatchewan. Melvin’s job with the Cooperators Lumber had the family move to Kamsack, Saskatchewan in 1967 and then in 1969, moving out to Alberta where Violet started her years of work at the seniors lodge in Olds, Alberta.
Once settled into the Alberta lifestyle, Violet and her family lived in numerous communities including Bowden, Sundre, Harmattan, and finally in 1982, building a home on an acreage west of Didsbury where they spent the next 30 years entertaining friends and family nearly every weekend.
Violet especially loved cooking for her family, gardening, sewing, and her grandchildren. She spent many volunteer hours at various senior centers, spending time with residents. She also enjoyed her many trips to Reno with friends and family members.
Violet is survived by her husband Melvin, her two sons Donald (Sandi) and Murray (Shelly); her grandchildren Lindsay Matchett (Ken), Ryan Matchett, Dani Rock (Marty) and Brett Matchett (Janay); and her great grandchildren Jarred and Henley Rock.
Upon Violets request, there will not be a funeral service, but we kindly ask that you fondly remember our spunky, hardworking and generous mom. Condolences to Violet’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Matchett” in the subject line.
