Obituary of Kathleen Marguerita Smith

Kathleen “Kay“ Marguerita Smith of Rimbey, Alberta and formerly of Eckville, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday September 27, 2023 at her home at ValleyView Manor, at the age of 93 years.

Kay was born on October 31, 1929 in Chase, B.C. The youngest of three children, Kay grew up in Turtle Valley with her siblings Harry and Pauline. Kay married Robert Smith on January 14, 1950 and together they raised a family of five children on a farm near Eckville. In 2008, Kay and Bob moved to Rimbey, and then in 2013 to Parkland Manor. Kay transferred to Valleyview Manor in June 2017, when the new facility was built. Over the years they liked to camp, fish, travel, Scottish and square dance, and play different card games. In later years Kay liked playing scrabble, doing puzzles, and reading.  Kay loved collecting salt and pepper sets to add to her collection, a collection of 3000 sets at one time.

Kay is survived by her four sons Garry (Joanne), Dale (Christa), Philip (Teresa), Jim (Lori); daughter Kathy (Bill) Webb; ten grandchildren Jason (Melissa), Colin (Christyn), Keith (Sandra), Shelley (Jordan) Lewis, Brennen, Jenna (Jesse) Verhaeghe, Stephen Webb, Madison, Teryn, and Janine; as well as by her eleven great grandchildren, Kassidy (Denver), Jocelynn, Ashlyn, Kendall, Kylee, Mackenzie, Carson, Navy, Cora, James, and Ryanna.  Kay also leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews.

Kay was predeceased by her husband Robert (2013), grandsons Robert (1995), Tristan (2001), Kelly (2022) and daughter-in-law Val (2022), brother Harry Hebner (2003) and Sister Pauline Anderson (2016).

A private family graveside service will be held at the Eckville Cemetery on Friday October 13, 2023. A celebration of Kay’s life will follow at the Eckville community Center at 2:00 p.m. Condolences to Kay’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Smith” in the subject line.
