Obituary of Lindsay Martin Smith
Our beloved Lindsay Martin Smith passed away suddenly but peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on the morning of July 8, 2023 at the age of 66.
Lindsay was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and if you believe the legends, he came out walking and talking. He spent his youth in Winnipeg, wheeling and dealing his way in and out of shenanigans alongside friends and family. Anyone who knew Lindsay was in awe of his larger-than-life personality. He was the sun, and when the sun shone, you felt warm and safe. That was Lindsay. At six foot four with broad shoulders and mitts like gloves, he was our teddy bear. Teddy to his wife and daughters, sometimes the bear to others. But always with love. He had the gift of gab from a young age, talking his way out of trouble. Later in life this skill suited him as he made his way into positions of oilfield sales. This followed his time spent as a truck driver, braving the icy winter roads, and as a fireman, taming oilfield fires, amongst many other vocations. Ice or fire, Lindsay had no fear. He met his first wife, Nancy, in Kindersley, Saskatchewan while he was stationed there for his work with Firemaster. Their union brought two daughters into the world, the apples of Lindsay’s eye. His Sammy and his Jenny. The 90’s found Lindsay with new life changes as he moved into contracting and building his future as he saw fit. His relationship with Nancy evolved to a friendship and life led him to his love, Nicky.
You couldn’t find someone harder working, harder loving, and harder living than Lindsay. He made sure those around him were taken care of and stopped at nothing to give the world to those he loved. Lindsay enjoyed many trips over the years, spending time camping, fishing, golfing, quading, taking in concerts and shows along the way. He immensely enjoyed entertaining, celebrating Deckfest yearly with steak and crab for his crowd. Always ready to cheers and share a story and a smile and a laugh, his motto was to “make memories” and boy do we have a lot of them. He made sure of it. Lindsay was greeted on the other side by so many of our loves; his mom Pauline and dad Robert, his father in love Bob and mother in love Inga, his friend and mother of his girls Nancy, his brother in love Troy, along with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends. We know in our hearts Lindsay won’t be watching over us on his own.
Supporting each other until we meet with our big guy again, is the love of his life, Nicky; his big brother Dave; his adoring daughters Samantha (Marshall) and Jennifer; sisters in love Laural (Jerry) and Angie (Les); along with countless family members and friends that will miss his immeasurable presence and life force.
A celebration of life will be held at Hangar 13, 3411 Airport Drive in Springbrook, Alberta (Sky Wings Aviation) on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Red Deer Foodbank, 7429 49 Ave #9, or Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, www.childrenshospital.ab.ca. In honor of Lindsay, please also consider registration with the Organ Donation program of Canada. A proud blood donor of many years, Lindsay gave what he had, even at the end, to help those with whatever life-giving gifts he could offer.
