Obituary of Marjorie Ava Mellott
Marjorie Ava Mellott passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at her home at Extendicare Michener Hill on Monday, March 6th 2023 at the age of 92.
Marjorie was born in Orofino, Idaho on May 23rd, 1930. She spent her early childhood in Idaho, and then moved to Ontario, Canada with her family when she was a young teen. From there the family moved to Northern Alberta.
As a young woman, Marjorie worked as a waitress in the local diner. It was there that she met Stanley Mellott. Stan and Marge were married on April 4th, 1951. Following marriage, the pair set out on an adventure that took them all over the Prairie Provinces and the Northern States. Stan worked on a seismic crew and they moved from place to place depending on where work took them. Marjorie always spoke fondly of this time and how much she enjoyed seeing different places and meeting people. They eventually settled down in Bentley, Alberta and became involved in the community through volunteering at the turkey shoot and Bentley Rodeo each year. Marge also ran the lunch counter at the Bentley Ski Hill for a few years. In 1971 they moved to Sylvan Lake, Alberta where they purchased a campground.
Marjorie lived in Sylvan Lake for 50 years where she was very active in the community. Stan and Marge were members of the Legion and spent many hours volunteering in different capacities along with enjoying the events and socializing. They were the organizers for the annual Legion Talent Show for 10 years, Stan was Legion President for a term and they were both awarded lifetime memberships. Stan was also a driver for the Sylvan Lake Seniors bus and he and Marge spent many hours planning and arranging trips for the seniors. Marjorie loved to entertain everyone on the bus with jokes and stories.
Marge loved her family and friends, was very community oriented and enjoyed life. As a mom and then a grandma she attended many sports, school and music events to support and encourage her children and grandchildren. In her later years she enjoyed activities like jam sessions, dances, pancake breakfasts, meat draws and bingo at the Legion and Senior’s Center. Throughout her life she loved to travel and was blessed to see much of Canada and the U.S. on the trips her and Stan took together.
Marjorie will be lovingly remembered by sons Jerry Mellott (Jenna) and Dale Mellott (Norreen); daughter Bev Latkolik; grandchildren Christopher Mellott (Patricia), Jay Gervais (Hope), Kelsey van Zanten (Nathan), and Kristina Kornelsen (Christopher); great grandchildren: Declan, Ayla, Davis and Olivia van Zanten, and Sawyer and Karalynn Kornelsen; sister Marion Griffiths; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Marjorie was pre-deceased by Stanley Mellott, her beloved husband of 62 years; as well as her parents William and Ava Brown; brother Jim Brown; and sisters Madeline Kingston, Doris Brown and Dorothy Brown.
Marjorie’s family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare Michener Hill for their kindness, compassion and gentle and dignified care of their beloved Mother and Grandmother.
